Electrical Services in St. Louis
Electricity isn't something you want to mess around with. That outlet that sparks when you plug something in? The light switch that's warm to the touch? The ceiling fan that wobbles like it's about to take flight? Those aren't just annoyances — they're safety problems. We fix them.
We handle electrical work across the St. Louis metro area, from old knob-and-tube wiring in North City bungalows to modern smart home setups in new construction out in Wentzville and O'Fallon. If it involves wires, switches, or outlets, we've got you covered.
What We Do
We handle the electrical work that keeps your home safe and functional. Here's what that looks like:
Outlets & Switches
Replacing worn-out outlets, upgrading to GFCI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms (that's code, by the way), installing USB outlets, adding dimmer switches, and replacing those old two-prong outlets with grounded three-prong receptacles. If your outlets are painted over, loose, or won't hold a plug anymore, it's time.
Ceiling Fan Installation
St. Louis in August — you know why you need a ceiling fan. We install new fans, replace old ones, add fan-rated boxes where there weren't any before, and set up wall controls or remotes. We also fix wobbly fans, which is usually a balance issue or a loose mounting bracket.
Light Fixture Swaps
Replacing that builder-grade "boob light" in the hallway with something that doesn't make you cringe every time you walk by. Chandeliers, pendants, recessed lighting conversions, under-cabinet lights, and outdoor fixtures. We handle the wiring, the mounting, and the cleanup.
Panel & Circuit Work
Adding dedicated circuits for window AC units, space heaters, or workshop equipment. Replacing faulty breakers. Labeling panels that look like someone threw darts at the directory. We don't do full panel upgrades (that's a master electrician job), but we handle everything up to that point.
Troubleshooting
Dead outlets, flickering lights, circuits that trip for no apparent reason, smoke detectors that chirp at 3 AM — we track down the problem and fix it. Electrical troubleshooting is half detective work, and we're good at it.
Code-Compliant Wiring
All our work meets current NEC and St. Louis County codes. We use the right wire gauges, proper box fill, and correct connections. When you sell your house and the inspector checks the electrical, our work won't be the problem.
Common Problems We Fix
These are the electrical issues we see most often in St. Louis homes. Every one of them is fixable.
"Half the outlets in my bedroom don't work."
This is almost always a tripped GFCI somewhere else in the house — usually in the bathroom or garage. GFCIs can control outlets in other rooms. If resetting doesn't fix it, there's a loose connection or a bad outlet in the chain. We trace the circuit and find the break.
"My lights flicker when the AC kicks on."
Common in older St. Louis homes where the electrical panel was sized for 1960s loads. Your AC draws a big surge on startup. A brief flicker is usually normal; sustained dimming means the circuit is overloaded or there's a loose neutral. We check both.
"The breaker keeps tripping."
Either the circuit is overloaded (too many things on one breaker), there's a short somewhere in the wiring, or the breaker itself is bad. We figure out which one and fix it. Space heaters and window units on the same circuit as your bedroom outlets? That's a recipe for tripping.
"I only have two-prong outlets."
Lots of older homes in Maplewood, Webster Groves, and South City still have ungrounded two-prong outlets. We upgrade them to grounded three-prong outlets where possible. If there's no ground wire in the box, we install GFCI outlets instead — that's the code-approved solution.
"My outlet is warm and smells like burning."
Stop using it immediately. This means there's a loose connection or damaged wiring that's arcing. It's a fire hazard. Call us — we treat this as an urgent repair. We'll replace the outlet, check the wiring in the box, and make sure the circuit is safe.
Electrical Safety Isn't Optional
Electrical fires cause over 50,000 house fires a year in the U.S. Loose connections, overloaded circuits, and DIY wiring gone wrong are the usual suspects. If something doesn't look right or feel right with your electrical, don't ignore it. A $100 repair beats a $100,000 insurance claim.
Code-Compliant
All work meets current NEC and local St. Louis codes. No shortcuts.
Tested & Verified
We test every circuit after working on it. You'll see it work before we leave.
Clean Work
Neat wiring, proper connections, labeled circuits. Workmanship you can be proud of.
Electrical FAQ
Do I need a permit for electrical work?
In St. Louis County, minor repairs (replacing outlets, switches, and fixtures) generally don't require a permit. Adding new circuits, moving panels, or running new wiring usually does. We'll let you know up front if your project needs a permit and handle the process.
How much does it cost to replace an outlet?
A standard outlet replacement runs $85–$125. GFCI outlets are $100–$150 installed. USB outlets run about $120–$160. These prices include the outlet, cover plate, and labor. Volume discounts apply if you're doing several at once.
Can you install a ceiling fan where there's just a light?
Yes, but we need to install a fan-rated electrical box first. Standard light boxes aren't designed to support the weight and vibration of a ceiling fan. We swap the box, mount the fan, and wire it up. The whole job usually takes 1–2 hours.
Are you a licensed electrician?
We're a licensed handyman service with extensive electrical experience. We handle repairs, replacements, and basic installations. For heavy-duty work like service upgrades, whole-house rewiring, or 240V appliance circuits, we'll connect you with a master electrician we trust.
My house is from the 1940s. Is the wiring safe?
Depends. Cloth-wrapped wiring from that era can still function, but the insulation gets brittle over time. Knob-and-tube wiring (common in pre-1940s homes in St. Louis Hills and The Hill) should be evaluated by an electrician. We can do an initial assessment and tell you what needs attention.
Can you add outdoor outlets?
Yes. We install weatherproof GFCI outlets on exterior walls for holiday lights, power tools, or patio equipment. The outlet gets an in-use cover so you can leave things plugged in even when it rains. We run the circuit from the nearest interior box or the panel.
